This summer has been crazy busy, I have been working out of town for the past few months along with everything else life has to offer. The few trips I managed to get in, I have headed for the hills. High into the hills. I have found myself wanting to throw dry flies at grayling, there are few fish that I have ever chased that will take a dry fly with such eagerness and tenacity. My favorite pattern recently acquired a new species, the bumblebee strikes again! My wife and I invited some friends to go chase grayling with dries. The trip was amazing, despite the inclement weather we all managed to catch our fill of grayling. As an added bonus we were graced with the presence of five bull moose at the parking lot of the lake. Amazing company and these beautiful fish will plant this trip firmly in the memory books.
There is something greatly rewarding about catching these fish that manage to survive the harshest of climates. There are only a few places in Colorado that you can chase grayling. If its trophies your after, seek your thrills elsewhere because these fish are made for beauty, not size.....but are trophies unto themselves. When I was a kid my father took me to catch grayling on the west slope. This is one of the earliest memories I have of fly fishing. I can remember stocking these stealthy sippers with a mosquito pattern. It was one of the events that galvanized my love and later addiction to the sport of fly fishing. Long live the long fin
